29 Key Stage Two children from Year 3-6 travelled to Wrexham to compete in an athletics competition. The day started with track events where one boy and one girl from each year group ran in sprint heats. The children were amazing, all finishing 1st or 2nd in their heat. Sam, Nancy, Maggie and Olivia's finished in in the top 4 of the 15 competing schools so qualified for the finals of their sprints. In the finals Sam finished 2nd, Nancy 3rd, Maggie 3rd and Olivia 2nd- we were so proud!
Next one boy and one girl from each year group ran in the 600m / 400m for Year 3. Again the children did us proud. There were 15 children in each race and Max finished 4th, Mia 8th, Freddie 4th, Sam 6th, Emilia 3rd and Mabon won a medal coming first with a superb sprint finish.
The final track events were the team relays. Our Year 6 boys finished 2nd, Year 6 girls 3rd, Year 5 boys 2nd, Year 6 girls 2nd in their heats and our Year 3/4 team came away with medals finishing first of all the 15 Year 3/4 teams competing with superb race- winning their races by at least 50m! Well done Nancy, Finn, Seren, Sam, Maggie, Louis, Mair and Freddie.
Whilst all of the track events were happening Y5/6 children also competed in field events, however we have not had the results for these events as yet.
At the end of the morning results from all the events were totalled and announced. We were absolutely delighted to hear that we had finished in 3rd place overall of all the school competing. Our Year 3/4 team finished 2nd overall and Y5/6 3rd. In the competition against other medium sized schools we finished 2nd. Wow Team Trefonen, what a fantastic set of results!
2023
28 KS2 children travelled to Queensway Athletics stadium, Wrexham to compete in a large athletics competition with 15 schools from the Oswestry area.
Our children were an absolute credit to the school. They took their responsibility of representing our school very seriously, knowing that so many other children would have loved to have competed and they did us proud.
The program started with sprints. We could enter one boy and one girl from each year group. Our children were incredible, five of our sprinters all won their races and two finished in theirs. An adult watching at the track said ‘Wow, Trefonen are amazing, they are winning everything!’ The sprints are timed and the top four children from the heats are called to sprint again in the finals. We were delighted that five of our children all qualified for the finals, so they were down the fastest four children from 15 schools! In their finals two finished 2nd, two 3rd and one 4th. A huge well done to all the sprinters.
The next events were the 600m, a very tough race to compete in. All of our children ran so hard and gave it their all. Some of our top positions came from our Year 5 boy, who finished 2nd to a pupil from another school who competes at an incredibly high level. Our Year 5 girl ran superbly and finished 3rd and our year 4 boy 4th in his race. These are incredible results against 15 other pupils. All of our our other runs came very close to or within top ten places.
The final track events were the relays- always the most exciting! The children had all worked so hard practising their baton changing all week during lunchtimes and it really paid off. Our Year six girls baton changing was fantastic and they all ran so hard for their own 100m leg. Our Year 5 boys were incredible, winning their race by a great distance, followed later by the 8 Year 3/4s in the 8 x 50m relay who ran the most brilliant race with amazing change overs- winning by another great gap over the other schools. Well done to all of our relay teams, you worked so hard and should be very proud.
In the field events we were delighted to hear that two of our Year 5 girls had won their events- standing vertical jump and standing long jump. Both girls were awarded with medals.
At the end of all the competing we were so pleased to find our that our Year 3/4 team had finished 2nd out of all the teams at the event and our Trefonen team finished 3rd in the medium sized schools category. We left Wrexham very proud of our team!
June 2022
33 pupils from Years 3-6 represented our school in the local athletics competition at Queensway stadium, Wrexham. The children all performed brilliantly and we were so proud of them. The day started with sprints for each year group 50m for year Three and up to 80m for year six. All of our children finished in the top 4 in their heat, with three children winning their races and three coming second. After all the heats the children with top finishing times progressed to the finals. We were delighted that three of our pupils qualified for the finals. They all ran superbly and Darcey won her race, making her the fastest Year 5 girl out of 13 schools- she was awarded a very well deserved medal. The next events were the 600m, a tough distance to race. Our children worked so hard in their races and ran brilliantly. We achieved three top three finishing places and two seconds and a first in the Year 3 boys, gaining another medal for Trefonen! The track events finished with relay races. Our baton changing practise paid off and the children were excellent, working so well in their teams. The Y6 girls won their heat by a good distance in the 4x 100 and the Year 3/4 followed doing the same in the 8 x50m. We later found that our 3/4 team finished second over all by just 0.32 seconds after all the heats had run!
While track events were taking place the field events were also running. We took part in all of the Y5/6 events, ball throw, standing long jump, long jump and vertical jump. When the winners were announced we had won two more first place medals and a second for our Year 5 girl's champion. At the end of the event overall winners were announced and we were delighted to hear that our Year 3/4 team had finished 3rd out of the 13 schools competing and our whole team finished 3rd in the medium sized schools. What a fantastic day Team Trefonen- we were so proud of you all!
