Curriculum Design Statement 2026 - V2 (23/01/26)
- Our Vision
At Trefonen Primary School, our curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision “Let your Light Shine.” We believe that every child is uniquely created, valued and capable of flourishing. Our curriculum is designed so that all pupils feel they belong, are known and are enabled to shine, regardless of background, need or starting point.
We nurture the whole child — academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually — so that pupils leave Trefonen confident, compassionate and ready to contribute positively to their community and the wider world.
Our core values of Kindness, Respect and Friendship underpin every aspect of curriculum design and daily practice. They shape how learning is experienced, how relationships are built and how pupils understand their responsibilities to one another.
- Curriculum Intent
Our curriculum is ambitious, coherent, sequenced to support progression and inclusive by design. It ensures that all pupils, including those with SEND, those who are disadvantaged and those with additional vulnerabilities, are able to access the same high-quality learning and achieve well.
We intend for our curriculum to:
- Secure strong foundations of knowledge, skills and vocabulary that build progressively over time
- Foster curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of learning
- Develop confident, articulate and resilient learners who live out kindness, respect and friendship
- Prepare pupils for the next stage of education and life in modern Britain, enabling them to shine in different ways
Our curriculum meets the requirements of the National Curriculum whilst also reflecting our local context, and values and needs of our school community, ensuring learning is meaningful, relevant and purposeful.
- Curriculum Design and Structure
Our school curriculum is carefully designed to meet the specific needs of our Trefonen School community, including ensuring inclusion, equity, ambition and coherence for all learners.
Coherently sequenced
Learning is deliberately planned so that knowledge and skills build logically from the Early Years through to Year 6. Key concepts are revisited, strengthened and connected over time, supporting pupils to remember more and apply learning confidently.
Knowledge-rich and skillful
We prioritise high-quality subject knowledge while explicitly developing essential skills such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving and critical thinking that help our pupils to engage in life’s BIG QUESTIONS. Vocabulary development is a key focus across all subjects.
Inclusive by design
Our school curriculum is inclusive by design – inclusion is embedded at the point of curriculum design. Lessons are planned with a clear understanding of learners’ abilities and barriers. Adaptive teaching is the norm in all classes, as a result reasonable adjustments and targeted support enable pupils with SEND to access the same ambitious curriculum alongside their peers, maintaining high expectations for all.
Broad, balanced and enriching
Alongside strong foundations in English and mathematics, pupils experience a rich curriculum including science, humanities, the arts, music, PE, design technology, computing, online safety and RE. Enrichment opportunities through visits and visitors provide wider experiences help pupils discover talents, deepen understanding and let their light shine beyond the classroom.
- Curriculum Implementation
Teachers have strong subject knowledge and use consistent, evidence-informed approaches that support learning, memory and understanding.
Across the curriculum, teaching:
- Builds on prior learning and addresses misconceptions
- Uses clear explanations, modelling and scaffolding
- Provides appropriate challenge and opportunities for depth
- Encourages discussion, reflection and collaboration
- Fosters positive relationships grounded in kindness, respect and friendship
Assessment opportunities have been carefully considered, they are purposeful and proportionate. Assessment opportunities are used to inform teaching, identify gaps and common misconceptions and to adapt provision while ensuring the curriculum remains broad and ambitious for all pupils.
- Personal Development and Values
Personal development is woven throughout our curriculum and daily school life. Through taught content our formal PSHE / RSE curriculum, assemblies, RE and lived experiences, pupils are supported to:
- Show empathy, kindness and respect for others
- Build and sustain healthy friendships and positive relationships
- Understand diversity, equality and their role in a respectful society
- Develop confidence, resilience and self-belief
Pupil voice, leadership opportunities and responsibility are actively promoted, enabling children to contribute meaningfully to school life and live out our vision to “Let your Light Shine.”
- Curriculum Impact
The impact of our curriculum is evident in pupils who:
- Achieve well from their starting points
- Retain knowledge and apply learning across subjects
- Demonstrate kindness, respect and friendship in their behaviour and attitudes
- Feel a strong sense of belonging and self-worth
- Are well-prepared for the next stage of their education
We regularly review, evaluate and refine our curriculum to ensure it continues to meet the needs of all learners and reflects our vision, values and the highest expectations.
- Our Commitment
At Trefonen Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive curriculum that enables every child to shine brightly, fulfil their potential and grow into kind, respectful and confident individuals who are ready to make a positive difference in the world.
