Intent – Our vision for Science
All around us we encounter science on a daily basis. At Trefonen CE Primary School our intent is to ensure all pupils gain scientific knowledge, practise skills and develop curiosity to understand what we encounter on a daily basis. Children will learn from a range of scientists who have shaped knowledge and realise what they can achieve as individuals to enhance our world during their next stage in education and their future careers.
Our curriculum has knowledge-led progression where we teach for long-term learning. Through establishing prior knowledge, misconceptions are addressed and science knowledge is progressive. Working scientifically then makes sense of the science knowledge.
As a core subject of the 2014 National Curriculum, the aim is ‘to ensure all pupils:
*develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
*develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
*are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.’
During the Early Years, pupils develop science knowledge and understanding through ‘The Natural World’ and they will have the opportunity to:
'*Explore the natural world around them
*Know some similarities and difference between the natural world around them and contrasting environments
*Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them.'
