Curriculum Design Statement
At Trefonen C.E Primary School, our curriculum is designed to nurture each child’s curiosity, independence, and connection to the world around them. We are committed to providing a rich and inclusive education that respects the unique context of our rural environment, engages our community, and prepares our pupils for a rapidly changing world. Our curriculum embraces hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that make use of our local resources, landscapes, and culture to foster a deep connection to place and community.
Core Principles:
- Personalized Learning: With our small class sizes, we tailor learning experiences to meet individual pupil needs, interests, and abilities. We strive to ensure that each child feels valued, supported, and challenged, creating a positive learning environment where all students can thrive.
- Community Integration: We are deeply rooted in our community, and our curriculum reflects this by incorporating local history, geography, and traditions. Through partnerships with community members, local businesses, and organizations, our pupils gain practical insights and learn the importance of community service and involvement.
- Experiential Learning: Our curriculum emphasizes outdoor education and practical experiences, encouraging pupils to learn by doing. This hands-on approach, combined with traditional academic learning, fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.
- Holistic Development: We aim to develop well-rounded individuals by supporting pupils’ intellectual, emotional, social, and physical growth. Our curriculum includes a strong focus on social-emotional learning, health, and wellness to ensure pupils develop resilience, self-confidence, and interpersonal skills.
- Sustainability and Environmental Awareness: Given our rural setting, we place a high priority on sustainability and environmental stewardship. Through studies in science and environmental education, pupils learn the value of conservation, respect for nature, and the impact they can have on preserving their surroundings.
Curriculum Goals:
- To foster a love for lifelong learning and curiosity.
- To provide foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and critical thinking.
- To encourage community involvement and respect for local culture and heritage.
- To support the development of independent and responsible learners.
- To promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
Curriculum Implementation:
Our teaching approach emphasizes flexibility, responsiveness, and inclusivity. We adopt mixed-age groupings, this promotes collaboration and peer learning. Our assessment practices focus on growth and development over time, ensuring that each child’s progress is celebrated and supported. Regular feedback and communication with families ensure a collaborative approach to each child’s educational journey.
At Trefonen, we are proud of our rural roots and dedicated to creating an engaging, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that prepares our pupils to be responsible, knowledgeable, and compassionate citizens. Our curriculum reflects our commitment to our students and our community, ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed and make a positive difference
